Case 097

The Missing Painting

Easy

A framed artwork disappeared from a private hallway.

Rule: exactly one suspect is guilty. The guilty suspect lies. Every innocent suspect tells the truth.
Drew

“Neither Peyton nor Lane is guilty.”

Peyton

“Sam is innocent.”

Lane

“Peyton and Sam are both innocent.”

Sam

“Neither Drew nor Lane is guilty.”

Avery

“Either Drew or Peyton is guilty.”

Who is guilty?

Solution: Avery

If Avery is guilty, Avery's statement is false and every other statement is true. Testing the other suspects creates at least one contradiction.
